Dribbling is one of the most difficult skills to master, but can be achieved using the right basketball drills. It is a skill that needs quick hands and a quick mind. In basketball, the ball is dribbled in the court in order to move the ball legally, if not to be passed to another player, or to be shot to the basket. A skilled player could use dribbling to move the ball faster and creates more opportunities to score a shot. But to an inexperienced player, it could cause a turnover to the other team by double dribbling. A player commits double dribble when he dribbles, then holds the ball and dribbles it again. As such, it is just right to perfect the skill to avoid making mistakes and causing the team turnovers especially at crucial times of the game.

There are several dribbling drills that could be used by players and coaches in order to enhance skills in dribbling and playing basketball. Some of which are figure 8 dribble, crab walk, around the world, catch-catch-catch and tap-tap-tap. Consistent practice of these drills will definitely improve ball handling and develop consistency.

Figure 8 and Crab walk are dribbling drills that will help a learning player to have a feel for dribbling between the legs. In a crab walk drill, the ball is being bounced between the legs, to be caught with the other hand. Alternate hands and proceed with this drill while walking around the court. Figure-8 drill is similar to crab walk drill, but unlike the crab walk drill, the ball will be brought to the back of the leg and back to its original position to form a figure 8.

The around the world, catch-catch-catch and tap-tap-tap drills improve the player’s hand speed and coordination. Around the world is done by circling the ball around different parts of the body. Circle the ball 12x around the head, then to the waist and to the legs. Catch-catch-catch is like playing catch with one’s self. It is done by passing the ball from one hand to the other between the legs without touching the ground. On the other hand, tap-tap-tap is a continuous low dribbling of the ball. The ball will be tapped once with the right hand, once by the left hand. Then, it will be tapped by the left hand, but this time, from behind the body, then tapped once again by the right hand.
